Essentials 6.2
A comprehensive trading indicator suite built for ES and MES futures traders — combining session levels, market structure, index breadth, and trade context into a single, actionable overlay.
What Is the Essentials Indicator?
The MicrosTrader Essentials indicator is your complete situational awareness system for trading ES and MES futures. It layers every critical reference level, session boundary, and market breadth signal onto your chart — so you trade with context, not in a vacuum.
Most traders fail not because they lack a strategy, but because they lack context. They take trades without knowing where the overnight high is, whether institutions are buying or selling relative to VWAP, or whether all four major indices are aligned. Essentials 6.2 solves that problem.
This is not a signal generator. It does not tell you when to buy or sell. What it does is paint the complete picture of the trading landscape — the levels price is likely to respect, the zones where volume and institutional activity concentrate, and the macro alignment of the broader market — so your own discretionary decisions are made with full information.
Core Principle: Every dot, line, and panel in this indicator answers one question — Where is price relative to what matters? When you can answer that instantly, you trade better.

Automatic color-coding for big and huge candles, plus VWAP momentum warnings when slope exceeds threshold.
Watchlist Panel
Six configurable symbols showing real-time percentage change from your chosen starting reference point.
Message Center
Context-aware trading reminders that shift automatically based on whether the market is trending up, down, or chopping.
15-Point Rotations
Open-based rotation levels plotted at ±15, ±30, ±45, ±60, ±75 points — a proven ES rotation framework.
The Trading Philosophy Behind This Tool
The Essentials indicator is built around a single belief: disciplined execution at the right levels beats prediction every time. ES futures traders who consistently profit are not better at predicting direction — they are better at knowing where price is likely to pause, reverse, or accelerate, and they have the discipline to act at those points.
The market is not random. It leaves fingerprints everywhere — the overnight high it tested but couldn't break, the VWAP it respected all morning, the previous day's low that became today's support. Your job is to read those fingerprints before the trade, not after.
— MicrosTrader Trading PhilosophyThe Hierarchy of Levels
Not all levels are created equal. Essentials is built around this priority order:
- Weekly Levels — Institutional participants watch prior week high/low. These are the longest-duration reference points on your chart and carry the most weight.
- Previous Day High/Low — The boundaries the prior session established. Breaks above PDH or below PDL are significant directional signals.
- Overnight High/Low (ONH/ONL) — Where globex price ranged while New York slept. These become the first targets and decision points when RTH opens.
- RTH Open — The most important single price of the trading day. All rotation levels and bias calculations originate here.
- VWAP — The institutional fair value for the day. Price above VWAP means institutions are net buyers; below means net sellers.
- Initial Balance High/Low — The range established in the first 30-60 minutes. Breaks above IBH or below IBL often signal directional intent for the session.
- Halfbacks — The 50% retracement of any range. Price gravitates toward halfbacks as a natural equilibrium zone.
All Modules Explained
The Essentials indicator is composed of eleven distinct modules. Each can be configured independently.
VWAP Line + Range Dots
Plots the daily VWAP line on your chart in gold (#efb800). Optionally displays dots at VWAP ±20 and ±30 points offset to the right — visual targets representing normal and extended VWAP deviation for ES.
How to use it: VWAP is your day's center of gravity. When price is above VWAP, lean long. When below, lean short. The ±20 and ±30 dots show you where price is "stretched" and likely to mean-revert. A VWAP distance of 30+ points is historically where ES tends to stall or reverse in normal volatility conditions.
Toggle: Show VWAP Range Dots checkbox in Master Controls.
Overnight Session — ONH / ONL / ON Halfback
Tracks the high and low of the overnight globex session (default 3:01 PM – 8:30 AM ET) and plots them as yellow (#efff3a) dots to the right of your chart. Also plots the ON Halfback as a cross at the midpoint of the overnight range.
How to use it: The ONH and ONL are the first levels RTH price will interact with. A break and hold above ONH is bullish. A rejection of ONH is bearish. When RTH opens inside the overnight range, expect rotational trading. When RTH opens outside, expect directional follow-through.
Toggle: Show Overnight Dots checkbox in Master Controls.
RTH Session — High / Low / Open / Halfback
Tracks the live RTH session high, low, and open. Plots green (#4CAF50) dots for high and low, a white (#ffffff) dot for open, and a cross for the RTH Halfback. All dots offset to the right for clean visual reference.
How to use it: The RTH Open is the most important price of the day — it's the price against which all bias decisions are made. Trading above the open in a trending market is an edge. The developing RTH High and Low give you expanding range context, and the Halfback shows where the middle of today's range is building.
Toggle: Show RTH Dots checkbox in Master Controls.
15-Point Rotation Levels
Plots white (#ffffff, 49% opacity) dots at RTH Open ±15, ±30, ±45, ±60, and ±75 points. These are the natural rotation targets for ES based on typical daily range behavior.
How to use it: When price breaks from the open, the first rotation target is typically 15 points. A strong trend day often reaches 30-45 points. Extreme days push 60-75 points. These levels define your profit targets and help you size expectations for any given session.
Last Week's High / Low
Plots weekly high and low from the prior week as purple (#8c51fa) dots. These are among the highest-confluence levels on the chart.
How to use it: Prior week levels are watched by institutional players, options market makers, and algorithmic systems. A test of last week's high often produces a reaction before a break. When ES closes above prior week high on strong volume and breadth, it signals a genuine breakout.
Opening Gap Lines
When RTH opens above or below the prior close, plots magenta (#ff3cff) horizontal lines at the gap boundaries. Optionally shows the 50% midline. Lines automatically remove when price fills the gap.
How to use it: Gap fills are one of the most consistent intraday tendencies in ES. When ES opens with a gap, price frequently returns to fill it — especially in the first 90 minutes. When a gap fill is completed, it often frees price to continue in the original gap direction.
Candle Size Alerts
Automatically recolors candles that exceed user-defined size thresholds. Default "Big" is 8 points (gray #8d8d8d / blue #335598); "Huge" is 15 points (dark red #710303). Tracks a big candle count for the session.
How to use it: Big candles indicate momentum and institutional participation. A single huge candle after a range expansion often signals exhaustion — the best counter-trade setup. The session big candle count keeps you aware of overall volatility character.
4-Pack Breadth Panel — ES / NQ / YM / RTY
A real-time panel showing where ES, NQ, YM, and RTY are positioned relative to yesterday's high, halfback, and low. Also shows each index's VWAP relationship — green (#4CAF50) for above, orange (#ff9800) for below, large text when extended beyond threshold.
How to use it: This is your macro alignment tool. When all four indices are above yesterday's high — the "All Above" warning fires — that is a strong bull signal. When indices are mixed, expect chop and reduce position size. Trade in the direction the majority of indices point.
Watchlist Panel
Tracks up to six user-configured symbols and displays their percentage change from a selectable starting point (yesterday's close, pre-market open, or RTH open). Color-coded from red to green with user-defined thresholds.
How to use it: Use the watchlist to track sector leaders or confirming instruments. If NVDA and AAPL are both down 1%+ and ES is trying to hold its low, that bearish pressure from big tech is likely to win.
Message Center
Displays context-appropriate trading reminders based on three states: trending up, trending down, or neutral/choppy. The trend detection uses price vs. open, VWAP relationship, and SMA slope.
How to use it: The Message Center is your psychological anchor. When the market is trending, it reminds you to stay with the trend and treat counter-trades as secondary. When the market is choppy, it reminds you to plan carefully and journal.
Small Range Alert
Measures the range of the pre-market period (8:30–9:00 AM CST by default) and alerts when it falls below a configurable threshold. A red (#7f0404) warning banner fires at the top right of the chart.
How to use it: Small pre-market ranges often precede choppy, range-bound sessions. When this alert fires, treat the day with lower conviction and tighter targets. Many experienced traders reduce size or skip the open entirely on small-range alerts.

Master Controls
| Setting Name | Default | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|
| Show RTH Dots | ON | Keep on during RTH hours. Toggle off overnight if chart feels crowded. |
| Show Overnight Dots | ON | Essential for overnight traders. RTH-only traders can hide these after 9:30 AM. |
| Show VWAP Range Dots | ON | Useful for visualizing VWAP extension. Turn off if using a separate VWAP indicator. |
Dot Configuration
| Setting Name | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight Dot Size | 2 | Increase on large monitors. 2-3 works for most setups. |
| RTH Dot Size | 2 | Match to overnight for visual consistency. |
| HalfBack Dot Size | 2 | Consider making halfbacks slightly smaller to de-emphasize vs extremes. |
| Number of Dots | 5 | Controls how many dots trail behind the current bar. 5 is a good balance. |
| HalfBack Dots | 2 | Halfbacks need fewer dots — 2 is sufficient. |
| Open Dots | 1 | One dot is enough for open. It is a reference point, not a range. |
| Line Offset | 50 | Push dots right of current price. Increase if using wider charts. |
Candle Alerts
| Setting | Default | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Big Candle Alert | 8 pts | 8-10 points works well for ES. Adjust down to 5-6 for low-volatility periods. |
| Huge Candle Alert | 15 pts | 15-20 points. A 15-point single candle in ES is significant by any measure. |
| VWAP Momentum Lookback | 5 bars | 5 bars on a 3-minute chart = 15 minutes of slope. Ideal for intraday. |
| VWAP Momentum Threshold | 0.3 | 0.3 is sensitive. Increase to 0.5+ if getting too many signals. |
4-Pack Panel
| Setting | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ES VWAP Distance | 30 pts | When ES is 30+ points from VWAP, the "ES" ticker in the panel enlarges to warn of extension. |
| NQ VWAP Distance | 110 pts | NQ moves 3-4x the points of ES. 110 points in NQ is roughly equivalent to 30 in ES. |
| Table Location | Bottom Right | Bottom right keeps it out of the way of price action on most chart layouts. |
Watchlist
| Setting | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Point | Yesterday Market Close | Most common reference. Use RTH Open if you want intraday-only % moves. |
| Max/Min % | ±1.5% | Adjust based on current market volatility. During high-vol periods, widen to ±3%. |
| Update Frequency | 1 min | 1 minute is the minimum and keeps the panel responsive without overloading. |
| Symbols | TSLA / AAPL / META / NVDA / MSFT / AMZN | Customize to your preferred leading indicators. Consider adding sector ETFs. |
Session Levels Deep Dive
The dot system in Essentials represents a hierarchy of reference prices. Understanding how each level interacts with the others is the foundation of reading intraday market structure.
Overnight Levels
The overnight session (typically 3:01 PM – 8:30 AM ET) establishes the globex range. These levels matter because:
- They represent where price discovered value without full US participation
- RTH traders use ONH/ONL as the first reference points at the open
- A gap through ONH at the open is a stronger signal than a gap into the overnight range
- The ON Halfback frequently acts as a magnet during the first hour
RTH Levels
Regular Trading Hours levels update continuously through the session:
- RTH Open is the single most important price — it anchors all rotation math
- Developing RTH High and Low expand the known range as the day progresses
- RTH Halfback shows the middle of today's established range
- As the day ages, the RTH High/Low become increasingly significant support and resistance
Level Interaction Rule: When multiple levels cluster within 2-3 points of each other — for example, ONH aligns with a prior week high — that confluence zone carries amplified significance. These are your highest-probability reaction points of the day.
Reading the Halfbacks
The halfback is the 50% midpoint of any range (overnight range or RTH range). Price treats the halfway point of any range as a natural equilibrium. In practice, this means:
- Price often stalls at halfbacks before continuing or reversing
- A failure to hold the halfback after a bounce is a bearish signal
- A reclaim of the halfback after a dip is a bullish sign
- On low-volatility days, price can oscillate around the halfback for hours
The 15-Point Rotation Framework
The 15-point levels off the RTH Open represent the natural cadence of ES intraday movement — typical institutional order flow patterns in ES futures:
±15 Points
First rotation target. On balanced days, price frequently oscillates between Open+15 and Open-15 before choosing direction.
±30 Points
Second target on trending days. A sustained break through the 15-point level with volume often signals continuation to 30.
±45–75 Points
Extended trend day targets. When macro news, FOMC, or strong breadth alignment drives the session, these levels come into play.
The 4-Pack Breadth Panel
The 4-Pack panel is one of the most powerful features in Essentials. It shows you in real time whether ES is moving with or against the broader market.
The panel tracks ES (via SPX), NQ (via QQQ), YM (via DIA), and RTY (via IWM) simultaneously, showing each index's position in a five-zone column:
| Zone | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Top Row | Dark Green (#2d6e2d) | Index is trading ABOVE yesterday's high — bullish breakout territory |
| Upper Row | Gray (#989696) | Index is between yesterday's halfback and high — upper distribution |
| Middle Row | Dark Gray (#414141) | Index label with VWAP color: green (#4CAF50) = above, orange (#ff9800) = below |
| Lower Row | Gray (#989696) | Index is between yesterday's low and halfback — lower distribution |
| Bottom Row | Dark Red (#6a0d01) | Index is trading BELOW yesterday's low — bearish breakdown territory |
Reading the Panel in Practice
Bullish Alignment Signal
All four index dots are in the top green row. The "⚠️ ALL ABOVE ⚠️" warning fires. High-confidence bull environment — look for pullback longs, hold winners longer, and avoid fade setups.
Bearish Alignment Signal
All four index dots are in the bottom red row. The "ALL BELOW" warning fires. High-confidence bear pressure — look for bounce shorts, tighten stops on longs, and avoid breakout buys.
The VWAP Color Code
In the middle row of each index column, the ticker label changes color based on VWAP relationship:
- Green — Index is trading above its VWAP. Bullish intraday bias.
- Large Green — Index is above VWAP by more than the configured threshold. Stretched to the upside — potential mean-reversion warning.
- Orange — Index is trading below its VWAP. Bearish intraday bias.
- Large Orange — Index is below VWAP by more than threshold. Stretched to downside — potential bounce setup.
When NQ is showing large orange text and ES is just below VWAP in normal orange — that divergence tells you tech is being sold harder than the broader market. That is often a leading indicator of more ES selling to come. Don't fight the NQ.
— 4-Pack Panel Reading FrameworkDaily Trading Workflow
Here is how to integrate Essentials 6.2 into your pre-market preparation and live trading routine.
Pre-Market Checklist (8:00–9:30 AM ET)
- Check Weekly Levels — Are we near last week's high or low? These are your highest-priority levels for the session. Plan reactions in advance.
- Read the Overnight Range — Note the ONH and ONL. Is the overnight range wide (15+ points) or narrow (under 8)? Wide = clearer direction. Narrow = expect early chop.
- Check the Small Range Alert — Has the pre-market range alert fired? If yes, reduce size expectations for the open.
- Identify the Gap — Is RTH opening above or below the prior close? Mark the gap boundaries. Gap fills are your first trade opportunity of the session.
- Note the Opening Gap Lines — These lines auto-draw. Know whether you are hunting a gap fill trade or trading away from the gap.
- Review the 4-Pack — Check overnight futures for ES, NQ, YM, and RTY alignment. All above prior highs? Expect bull open. All below prior lows? Expect bear open. Mixed? Expect discovery and early volatility.
- Set Your 15-Point Rotation Targets — Based on the expected RTH open price, mentally note where Open±15, ±30, and ±45 will be. These are your initial target zones.
Live Trading Session (9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET)
- First 15 Minutes — Do not trade the first 5 minutes. Use the first 15 to observe. Which levels are being tested? Is price holding above or below the RTH Open?
- Monitor the Message Center — After 15-20 minutes, the trend detection should have a read. Trade in alignment with that message.
- Watch the 4-Pack Panel — Is ES moving with all four indices or diverging? Divergence warns of instability. Confirmation validates the move.
- Watch for Candle Alerts — Big candles in series signal institutional participation. A single huge candle after a 20-30 point run often marks exhaustion.
- VWAP is Your Compass — Every trade should be taken with awareness of VWAP. Longs above VWAP with positive breadth are high-quality. Longs below VWAP require extra evidence.
- Stop Trading Zones — Respect the NY Lunch (default 10:15–12:30) and Final 30 (3:30–4:00) session highlights. These are shaded red on your chart.
The Stop Trading Zones are not suggestions. The NY Lunch session is the lowest-probability trading period of the day. Volume dries up, spreads widen, and moves are more likely to be noise than signal. The Final 30 brings end-of-day positioning and hedging that can reverse intraday trends without warning.
Best Practices for Essentials Users
Chart Setup Recommendations
- Use Essentials on a 3-minute chart as your primary trading timeframe. The candle alerts and VWAP calculations are calibrated for 3-minute bars.
- Keep the line offset at 50 bars to the right. This gives your dots room to breathe without pushing them off screen.
- Use the 15-point rotation dots offset to the left (default -75 bars) so they appear as a separate reference column on the left side of your chart.
- Enable the Watchlist in horizontal mode at the bottom left — it reads naturally like a ticker without taking up vertical space.
- Keep the 4-Pack panel at bottom right where it does not obstruct price action during active trading.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring the Stop Trading zones. The red background highlighting exists for a reason. Honor it.
- Trading against index alignment. If three of four indices in the 4-Pack are showing bearish positioning, a long trade in ES requires exceptional justification.
- Treating all levels equally. Weekly levels > prior day levels > overnight levels > intraday levels. When they align, conviction should be highest.
- Chasing big candles. A huge candle alert on the chart is more often a signal to take profit than to enter. The institutional order that drove that candle is likely done.
- Ignoring the Message Center. If the market is in neutral/chop mode and you are still swinging for 30-point moves, the message center is telling you something you are not listening to.
The One Question Rule
Before any trade, ask yourself one question:
Is price above or below VWAP, and are the four major indices in agreement with that direction? If yes — trade in that direction with conviction. If no — wait for clarity or reduce size significantly.
— The One Question Rule, MicrosTrader MethodFrequently Asked Questions
Why are there dots instead of lines for the session levels?
Dots offset to the right give you a clean reference column without cluttering your price action. Traditional horizontal lines extend across your entire chart and visually interfere with reading candles. The dot system gives you the level reference without the noise.
The 4-Pack panel uses SPX and ETFs instead of actual futures contracts. Is that accurate?
For the purpose of measuring relative position to yesterday's range, SPX, QQQ, DIA, and IWM are excellent proxies. The VWAP calculation uses direct futures feeds (ES1!, NQ1!, YM1!, RTY1!) for accuracy.
What timeframe should I use this indicator on?
Essentials was designed primarily for the 3-minute chart. The VWAP momentum lookback (5 bars = 15 minutes), the candle size thresholds (8 and 15 points), and the session-based calculations all perform best on intraday bars between 1 and 15 minutes.
The Micro Ranges boxes are invisible. Are they working?
Yes — the Micro Ranges (IB Range, User I, User II) draw with very high transparency by default. They are designed to be subtle background shading rather than prominent boxes. If you want them more visible, increase opacity in the color settings.
How do I customize the Message Center?
In the Message Center settings group, you will find three text areas: Short Message, Long Message, and Normal/Chop Message. Edit these with whatever trading rules or reminders resonate with your own strategy. The indicator detects trend state automatically and displays the appropriate message.
Why does the Small Range Alert only fire in the morning?
The Small Range Alert measures the pre-market period (8:30–9:00 AM CST by default). Pre-market range is one of the most reliable predictors of intraday range character. It fires once at the open and stays on screen for the rest of the session as a reminder of the day's volatility profile.

Remember: The Essentials indicator gives you context. It tells you where price is relative to what matters. The decision of when and how to trade that context is yours — and that is where your edge lives. Use these tools as the foundation of a disciplined pre-trade checklist, not as signals to blindly follow.
